Having recognized the demand amongst artists in the San Diego songwriting community for invaluable instructional content on methods and tools to hone in their songwriting and production skills, SDSG is honored to welcome Mr. Huart for a special event.
At this interactive session, Warren will detail his techniques with live ProTools examples, discussing the writing and recording process as well as providing a look behind the scenes of alternative rock production. Attendees will be welcome to participate in Q&A around a broad range of topics, including the symbiotic relationship between songwriting and production.
Taking the MTS Trolley is a great option. You can get off at the Santa Fe Depot station, cross over the tracks, and you are right at the Grande South Building (two identical high-rise buildings adjacent to the track, the Grande South is the one closest to Broadway).
If you wish to drive and park, there is a parking lot immediately adjacent to the building on the South Side run by Ace Parking that is available for parking on the weekends. It will run you $15 for 10 hours. If you want to save some money, Ace also runs a lot called “1075 Navy Pier” located at 910 N. Harbor Drive which is $10 for 12 hours (Next to the Midway). There is also a newer garage located on Kettner and Cedar (775 Cedar) which is also $10 flat fee. Metered street parking is enforced on Saturdays and you should find that the spots along Harbor Drive and the immediate vicinity will have 3 hour limits and charge $2.50 per hour. Further up Harbor Drive North of Waterfront Park the meter limits are 4 hours @ $2.50 per hour. here is limited street parking right in front of the building on Pacific Highway that is not metered but the limit is only 2 hours, and spots can be difficult to get.

San Diego Songwriter’s Guild is pleased and honored to welcome musician, actor, author, entrepreneur and investor Marc Ferrari as a special guest speaker. The focus of this event will be the business of music libraries as it applies to strategies for composers and songwriters. Marc will also be prepared to share his authoritative insight on the current and future direction of the industry including advice to musicians and songwriters on the rise in developing an understanding of the business and legal elements, techniques for working with industry insiders (music supervisors/producers), negotiations, contracts, publishing, merchandising, endorsements, money management and more.
Marc Ferrari Bio:
Marc was born near New York City and relocated upstate where he stayed through graduation. After first cutting his teeth in the bar circuit of Western New York, by age 19 he moved to Boston for greener and more lucrative pastures which quickly earned him a reputation as a dynamic performer/writer playing on studio sessions with various artists and producers such as Jimmy Miller. With his musical appetite remaining unsatisfied while recording/performing in the New England area, he relocated to Los Angeles. Marc is best known for his performance work as a guitar player in the 80’s and 90’s rock bands Keel, Cold Sweat, and Medicine Wheel, having worked with producer Gene Simmons of Kiss and toured extensively with the likes of Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, and Dio. Marc appeared in the Wayne’s World movie franchise as the guitarist of fictional band Crucial Taunt, and went on to follow those film roles with various TV appearances including “Murder, She Wrote” and “Step by Step.” He wrote two theme songs that were used in video productions for the 1996 Summer Olympics called “Capture The Dream” and “Chance Of A Lifetime.” In addition, 9 other songs from his catalog were used in various athlete profiles and special segments. Later that year, he was presented with a special achievement award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his contributions to the 1996 Emmy-award winning daytime soap opera Guiding Light.
In the early 1990s, recognizing a strong demand in the film and TV industry for contemporary music that could be licensed in an easy, efficient, and logical catalog format, Marc founded MasterSource, the industry’s first song-based production library. Under his leadership, MasterSource became a leading supplier of pre-cleared songs, source music and production music.
In 2002, Marc authored the book, Rock Star 101: A Rock Star’s Guide to Survival and Success in the Music Business, considered to be one of the most authoritative books on the subject, offering a unique perspective of the Music Business from the viewpoint of a working musician. Packed with advice and entertaining stories from life on stage and on the road, Rock Star 101 tells musicians on the rise how to understand the business and legal elements of the music industry. Topics include instruction on merchandising, publishing, and endorsements. The material offers coaching content on how artists can protect their band and person from legal and financial conflicts, negotiation of crucial contract elements, finding sideline work in related fields, showcasing and auditioning material, and developing a long-term perspective for musical success.
MasterSource was acquired by Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) in 2007, where Marc went on to work as a senior executive at UMPG, serving as a division President from 2007 until 2012. Since 2012, Marc has continued to produce content for various UMPG production music libraries. Marc currently resided with his wife and children in the Los Angeles area where he invests in media and technology startups as an active member of the Tech Coast Angels network. He spends a considerable amount of time working on charitable causes and speaking at music and entertainment industry events, and has most recently published a children’s book.
Few musicians have been able to match Marc’s career achievements in the musical industry in terms of breadth and influence. We are honored and grateful to have him share his experiences and wisdom with our membership.
“Marc’s ties to the industry are incredible. He knows almost every major music supervisor and every studio” — -Gary Gross, Worldwide President, Production Music Group at Universal Music

]]>Jim Attebery
Date: Cancelled
Event Type: Listening Session
SDSG begins the year with a chance to meet with and have your songs heard and critiqued by Jim Attebery, the co-founder and President of The Durango Songwriter’s Expo, a premier national singer-songwriter event since it was founded in 1996.
The Durango Expo occurs twice a year, once in Santa Ynez Wine Country, and again in October in Boulder, Colorado. With over 40 music industry pros and hit songwriters present and registration limited to 200 attendees, the Expo offers an unparalleled networking opportunity. The Expo is one of the few songwriters’ events where participants get their music heard extensively by established industry vets. Jim is a very well-connected songwriter, producer, and studio owner who has worked with a variety of bands and artists and has written music for film and TV for many years.
Jim will offer critiques on submissions, and attendees will, we’re sure, find the meeting informative and enjoyable.
For more info about Durango visit www.durango-songwriters-expo.com
Song critique is provided by the Guest Speaker, and if time, comments from the floor. It is at the Guest Speaker’s discretion as to how much of the song he/she wishes to hear (when to fade song) before he is ready to provide a valuable, educated, and expert critique.
